Kamphangsaen Landfill LFGTE

 Client

Kasetsart Univeristy through USEPA
 Timeline

October 1998 - 2002
 Project
 Description
The primary objective of the Project is to reduce the emission of approximately 36,000 metric tons of methane gas from the Kamphangsaen Landfill over a 12-year period. The Project will achieve the following:
  • Convert a successful experimental landfill gas collection system to a full-scale methane recovery system and power plant (consisting of two 0.435 MW internal combustion engine/generator sets).
  • The University will use electricity produced by this facility.
  • The project will be the first of its kind in this region and thus will provide a demonstration of the technology and financial and institutional arrangements necessary for implementation of a LFG project in Thailand.
  • The project will also encourage replication of the project through dissemination of technical information and project results.
  • Project implementation will be through a public-private partnership. This landfill is located about 60 km north of Bangkok, adjacent to the University.

SCS’ tasks to date have included:

  • Providing technical support and training for system design, repairs, construction, well-field balancing, and operation of the LFG collection system.

  • Preparation of an application to the World Bank for GEF funding for development of the project, and;

  • Periodic reporting to project stakeholders (including members of the Royal family).  The application for GEF funding (for a “medium-sized project”), in the amount of US$1.7 million, has been submitted in compliance with the World Bank format.

A review of the project and funding application by the World Bank’s reviewing consultant, Mr. N.C. Vasuki, indicates a high probability of funding for this project.  For example, an excerpt from Mr. Vasuki’s 06 June 2002, letter to the World Bank’s Bangkok office states that “the proposed project by KU, to utilize landfill gas (LFG) currently being emitted by the Kamphangsaeng Landfill Phase 1, is quite economically viable and, in fact, environmentally beneficial.  It will be an important step in assisting the Royal Kingdom of Thailand’s program for reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) in Thailand.”
