Odor Control and Toxic Emissions Investigations, Modeling, and Remediation

Typical Tasks Performed:

• Sampling and analysis of LFG for the presence of trace volatile organic compounds
• Air modeling of gas vents and flares for impact evaluation, risk assessment, and permitting purposes
• Odor-panel testing
• Short- and long-term ambient air monitoring in neighborhoods near and down-wind from landfills
• Air monitoring during excavation of old landfill sites

• Design of facilities to capture and treat hazardous and odorous elements in LFG
• Preparation of health and safety plans for landfill workers and for public health protection

Recent regulations have focused on measures to reduce the emission of LFG to the atmosphere, since LFG can contribute to local air pollution and odors, and trace constituents in the gas may be harmful to public health.  Also, uncontrolled release of LFG can contribute substantially to global warming.  SCS is often called on to assess these impacts, recommend preventative measures, and design emission reduction systems.

• Ambient Air Quality Monitoring in residential community for methane and vinyl chloride gases, BKK Class I (hazardous wastes allowed) Landfill, West Covina, California.
   

• Control of Odors and Toxic and Combustible Gas Emissions, Port Washington Landfill, Town of North Hempstead, New York.
   

• Development of a nationwide database and evaluation of best available technologies to remove trace constituents from recovered LFG for the Gas Research Institute.
   

• LFG Design and Construction of an LFG control system to mitigate odors at an active facility that accepts construction and demolition (C&D) waste, including drywall waste, and that therefore has high hydrogen sulfide emissions, Blydenburgh Road Landfill, Islip, New York.
