FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 6, 2011 Contact: SCS Engineers Provides Environmental Services to Mercado del Barrio Redevelopment Project SAN DIEGO, Calif.— SCS Engineers has been retained by Shea Properties and PCL Construction Services, for the Mercado del Barrio, Barrio Logan’s newest affordable housing complex. The project recently broke ground and SCS’ role includes providing environmental consulting and construction services. In the making for more than 20 years, the Mercado del Barrio is located in the heart of the Barrio Logan community, adjacent to historic Chicano Park and the Coronado Bridge near downtown San Diego. Approximately seven acres in the neighborhood are being redeveloped by Shea Properties with plans including a grocery store, commercial and restaurant space, affordable housing, and an aboveground parking structure. The overall project achieves important community goals by incorporating smart growth and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles. During the planning phases of the project, SCS not only conducted soils investigations but also a soil management plan. The plan was approved by the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. Services provided are being managed by Ryan Marcos and Chris Spengler, and Dan Johnson is the managing principal.
