Robert P. Stearns has Been Selected for Induction into the University of Iowa’s Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy

Long Beach, CA - The University of Iowa, College of Engineering, has announced that Robert P. Stearns, P.E., DEE, has been selected for induction into the College’s Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy for 2005.  This honor recognizes Mr. Stearns’ exemplary personal achievements, including his contributions to the advancement of the engineering profession and his leadership to establish and help build a notable environmental engineering practice.  Induction ceremonies are scheduled for June 11, 2005, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Mr. Stearns was a co-founder of SCS Engineers in 1970, and serves as the firm’s Chairman.  He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Los Angeles Section.  He has also served as a board and committee member of the Solid Waste Association of North America and the National Solid Wastes Management Association.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to improving waste management practices.

Mr. Stearns has been recognized nationally for his significant contributions to the environmental engineering profession and advancement of the practices of solid waste management.  He has been a frequent contributor to professional and trade association technical programs, and has published many articles addressing solid waste management and landfill gas control and recovery issues.  In 2003, he was inducted into the Environmental Industry Association’s prestigious Hall of Fame. 

Mr. Stearns graduated from the University of Iowa, with a BS in Civil Engineering and subsequently earned an MS in Engineering Management from UCLA.  He is a registered professional engineer in the states of California, Virginia and Ohio.
