Bellevue, WA – SCS Engineers recently announced the appointment of Mark D. Varljen, RG, as a corporate officer with the title of vice president. “This appointment reflects Mark’s respected position in our industry, past strong performance, and our hopes and plans for him in the future” noted James Walsh, President/CEO.

Varljen is a senior-level hydrogeologist and also serves as SCS Engineers’ National Partner for Groundwater Services. Varljen conducts research, publishes articles in scientific and trade journals, and is a frequent invited speaker at National and International technical conferences. He is currently a member of the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation. His research expertise includes field methodologies, uncertainty analysis techniques, and long term monitoring and remedial process optimization. As a vice president, Varljen will provide a stronger influence in regional and corporate decision making. Varljen will continue to be based out of SCS Engineers’ Bellevue, Wash., office.

Varljen holds a B.S. in Earth Sciences from Penn State University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. He has been active as a professional in industry, government research, and consulting since 1986.  His primary area of expertise is the assessment and cleanup of contaminated properties, with an emphasis on groundwater contaminants. Varljen was the founder and principal hydrogeologist of Applied Hydrogeologic Research, Inc., which was acquired by SCS Engineers in November, 2000.  Since joining SCS Engineers, Varljen has provided strategic direction, staff mentoring and business development in groundwater services, and helped establish and build SCS Engineers’ practice in long-term operations, monitoring, and maintenance of cleanup sites. He has also managed various environmental projects for local and national clients ranging from property transaction screens to cleanups at Superfund sites.
