Power Plant – Shanxi Jincheng Anthracite Coal Mining Company, Shanxi, People’s Republic of China

SCS Engineers Landfill Gas International ServicesShanxi Jincheng Anthracite Coal Mining Company (JMG) has constructed a 120-megawatt power plant fired by coal mine methane (CMM), which contains about 40 percent methane. The power plant will incorporate the following principal components:

  • Pressurization station and two 30,000 cubic meter CMM gas holders
  • 60 1.8-megawatt Caterpillar 3520 reciprocating engine-generators
  • 12 waste-heat recovery boilers
  • Four steam turbine-generators

The project cost is about $200 million in United States dollars. Revenue produced by the project will consist of avoided power purchases, sale of excess power to the local utility company and the sale of certified emission reductions (CERs) under the Clean Development Mechanism.

JMG engaged SCS Energy, a division of SCS Engineers, to provide technical assistance in development of the project. SCS’s services encompassed:

  • design review
  • assistance in procurement
  • assistance in monitoring contractors & equipment suppliers
  • assistance in plant performance testing

The project commenced operation in June 2008.
