Biogas, Anaerobic Digestion for Industry and Agriculture

anaerobic digestion biogas

SCS Engineers performs gas-to-energy and waste-to-energy projects, including the design and design-build of facilities. These are attractive options for agricultural and food processing wastes, for treating municipal and industrial wastewater, and for landfills because all these wastes are feedstock for renewable energy.

Biomass are residues from plants and animals obtained from harvesting and processing of agricultural and forestry crops. Anaerobic digestion produces gas from organic wastes such as livestock manure and food processing waste. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), are solid wastes that are not reused or recycled. All can provide a fuel source for energy production and reusable byproducts.

These types of projects may consist of power plants fueled on landfill gas or digester gas and employing reciprocating engines, combustion turbines, microturbines, or fuel cells. SCS also has designed and procured biogas compression-treatment skids to supply landfill gas and digester gas to distributed generation facilities. SCS designs and fabricates skids to supply fuel to facilities that employ fuel cells, microturbines, and reciprocating engines. SCS Energy customizes biogas compression-treatment skids to meet your specific needs; then we incorporate into projects designed and constructed to your exact specifications.

SCS Engineers’ biogas treatment and conversion projects employ a broad range of technologies, including:

  • Pressure swing adsorption (low- and high-pressure)
  • Membranes (low-pressure)
  • Physical absorption (Selexol)
  • Thermal swing adsorption
  • Hydrogen sulfide removal (SulfaTreat and other media-based systems)
  • Non-regenerative activated carbon

In addition to projects involving new facilities, SCS has rehabilitated and re-started three previously defunct reciprocating engine plants fueled by landfill gas, and converted one reciprocating engine plant fueled by natural gas to landfill gas co-firing.

Anaerobic Digestion

As fossil energy prices and supplies vacillate, and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, our nation looks toward renewable energy generation and energy independence. For this reason, capturing energy from food waste and agricultural byproducts is becoming more important. Post-consumer food scraps (biomass) can have up to three times as much energy potential as biosolids.

SCS brings together our decades of consulting and engineering expertise to design and integrate programs feasible for your region. Our knowledge in anaerobic digestion results from our experience in:

  • Organics diversion and sustainable materials management
  • Solid waste evaluation, collection, and transport
  • Wastewater treatment and monitoring

Wastewater treatment facilities are ideal for increasing the diversion of food waste in an urban setting because the infrastructure already exists and trained personnel are on-site. Rural areas have this option as well as the option of composting programs, or a combination.

Biogas Conversion & Cleanup

SCS designs facilities to convert landfill gas or digester gas to Renewable Natural Gas or cleaning landfill gas or digester gas to high-quality medium-BTU gas. In addition to conversion projects, SCS provides complete plant-improvement programs, which can double plant capacity.
