Facility Decommissioning and Demolition

Facility-DemoSCS Engineers recognizes that time and economic constraints are often associated with the decommissioning and/or demolition of a facility. We offer a full complement of responsive and cost efficient environmental services that improve the safety and stability of your facility, reduce risks to the environment and human health, and mitigate liabilities.

Facility decommissioning and demolition projects are performed for many reasons, such as obsolescence, divestiture, down-sizing, compliance with new regulations, and relocation of operations. Managing environmental uncertainty is one of the biggest challenges for successful decommissioning and demolition.

Paints, coatings, and sealants used in building materials can contain hazardous substances such as lead, asbestos, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Improperly managed, these materials can create liabilities. On the other hand, many structures have significant assets (e.g., steel, copper, wood) that can be recovered through environmentally-friendly deconstruction. An experienced contractor can help maximize assets while minimizing liabilities.

Proper characterization and disposal of contaminated materials requires a thorough understanding of state and Federal laws for management of solid wastes and hazardous substances. Some jurisdictions allow excavated contaminated materials to be deposited on-site, while others require that they be taken to a licensed disposal facility. SCS offers a combination of consulting experts and experienced remediation construction professionals to assist with compliance while balancing costs and reducing liabilities.

Our experience includes an array of projects that combine environmental remediation with construction activities, including sites with ash, lead, petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, coal tar residuals, pesticides, lead-based paint, and asbestos. Our construction crews are experienced at decommissioning, salvage recovery, decontamination and demolition of warehouses, chemical plants, electronics processing, and steel fabrication facilities. SCS is a full-service licensed and bonded environmental contractor serving clients nationwide.
