Clean Ocean Access is hosting Healthy Soils Healthy Seas Rhode Island – Stakeholder Meeting #2 on June 18 at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI.
The overarching goal of the Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Rhode Island (HSHSRI) Project is to protect ocean health by establishing a multi-year integrated materials management solution with an initial pilot program focused on business and residential composting on Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island, to inspire behavior change resulting in the reduction and elimination of litter that would otherwise become marine debris.
The HSHSRI program combines with existing composting efforts into a pilot program that aims to demonstrate the effectiveness, efficiency, and strategic benefit of diverting food waste from the landfill. By bringing together business composting, curbside composting, market drop off composting, and backyard composting, a reduction will result in less food waste collected, transported, and sent to the landfill. This also creates a financial incentive for residents, businesses, and local governments to examine the long-term value of island-wide composting efforts.
