What we are looking for

SCS Engineers (SCS) is seeking an independent, forward-thinking engineer to assist with the workload of diverse, challenging solid waste projects in Virginia. This position is based out of the Richmond, VA metro area. Initially the qualified individual will be expected to provide engineering support to our existing solid waste practice consisting of solid waste facilities, landfill, and landfill gas design, air permitting, and construction oversite, for private and municipal clients. This position includes opportunities for landfill and other solid waste facility permitting and design (all phases, including construction plans, specifications and construction documents), engineering analysis, feasibility studies, report writing, as well as construction oversight. As new work develops, the individual will be required to manage and maintain contact with clients, and manage the schedule and work product, consistent within SCSs quality control standards.

How you can make an impact

  • Prepare engineering calculations in support of reports and design and permit documents.
  • Prepare engineering and permitting design drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Prepare permit applications and/or regulatory agency submittals and responses with supporting documentation.
  • Complete quality control reviews on all work (reports, design plans, design calculations, data, etc.) prior to submission.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and clients as directed.
  • Prepare short form site-specific health and safety plans as requested.
  • Participate in health and safety training as required.
  • Conduct and document construction quality assurance observations in the field to ensure compliance with construction documents.
  • Work may include both office and field activities, such as field meetings with clients
  • Multi-media sampling (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air) and reporting
  • Oversight of construction activities, collection of samples, etc., as well as office activities including engineering analysis
  • Occasional travel may be required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Basic AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil3D knowledge is preferred.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of scientific concepts including physics, statistics, chemistry, mathematics, geosciences, and fluid mechanics. Knowledge of civil engineering concepts (i.e., concrete foundations/structures) desirable.
  • Basic health and safety knowledge.
  • Ability to read directions for field testing equipment.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools such as hammer, screwdriver, etc.
  • Ability to travel and be in the field as directed by supervisor or project manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree or higher in Engineering required.
  • Internship/university studies experience in Solid Waste, Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical preferred
  • 0-2 years of experience in Solid Waste, Civil Engineering, or Environmental Engineering
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written (technical)
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record in good standing required.

Pay range for this position is $62,000 to $67,000 depending on experience and location. This does not include bonuses or our Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
