Summer Intern - Scientist

What we are looking for

SCS Engineers is looking for a summer 2024 intern for our Winchester, VA office. SCS’s goal is to provide a student intern with valuable technical and engineering business experience through our diverse range of projects for the clients we serve. Also, we believe this opportunity provides a student intern the ability to explore the beginnings of their own career path. As an intern, you may work with us on environmental monitoring, assessment, and remediation projects. You will work 40 hours per week typically. Interns will be in the field 75-80% of the time (75% of that time requiring overnight travel), so it is a lot of hands-on learning in the field. The paid internship will start in May/June 2024 and end in August/September 2024. Your exact start and end date will be determined to fit with your school schedule.

How you can make an impact as an Intern

You contribute to our projects by assisting SCS project teams with the following tasks:

• Record data during field work, which could include, but not limited to: soil characteristics, lithology, groundwater or surface water data, photographs, or summaries of visual observations through photograph and written field logs in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• Collect samples from hazardous and non-hazardous sites, including: soil, air, surface water, and groundwater.
• Prepare environmental monitoring reports, including tabulated data, charts, graphs, sketches, statistical analysis, and/or figures.
• Prepare reports such as stormwater and groundwater compliance reports.
• Participate in health and safety training as required.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology or Environmental Science and graduating by June 2026 required
• Must be willing to live in the Winchester, VA area for Summer 2024 (housing allowance will not be provided)
• Solid technical and computer skills (AutoCAD experience is a plus)
• Previous leadership experience required
• Strong written and verbal communication
• Great attention to detail and solid judgment
• Valid driver’s license with a driving record in good standing required
• Ability to travel overnight for work outside of the SCS office required

Pay for this role is between $18-$20/hr depending on your experience.
