Composting Program Ramping Up

A look at the City of Asheville and Buncombe County (North Carolina) composting program from inception to the current results of the most recent waste study. About 65% of registrants claimed they had not been
composting at all prior to signing up for the composting program. The county estimates that the composting bins have diverted 160 tons of waste from the landfill, which adds to the landfill’s life. Extrapolating, the bins divert 225 tons per year, which is equated to 756 tons of CO2 or the yearly emissions of 164 typical automobiles in the county.
