Partnership transforms landfill acreage into a 9-hole course and expands the Lanchester Nature Trail network.
Narvon, Pa. – The Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA) and environmental consulting firm SCS Engineers will celebrate the grand opening of the new Lanchester Landfill Disc Golf Course on Sunday, June 29, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Lanchester Landfill & Reclamation Center (7224 Division Hwy). The free event features a ceremonial “ribbon cutting”/first putt, complimentary food and beverages, and two consecutive rounds on the brand-new 9-hole layout. All skill levels are welcome; advance registration is encouraged at the event webpage.
“Disc golf and landfills can be a match made in heaven,” said Robert Watts, Executive Director of CCSWA. “By converting unused woodland at the landfill into a first-class course, we’re drawing visitors here for more than waste disposal and proving that solid-waste facilities can serve as community assets.”
Recreation, Forest Stewardship, and Education in One Place
Carved through mature woodlands, the course was designed in partnership by SCS Engineers, CCSWA, and the Lancaster County Disc Golf Club, including Travis Dombach, Mark Heisey, Chris Toevs, David Hostetter, and Micah Sneller, who donated hundreds of volunteer hours to refine the fairways and the locations of baskets and tee pads. The project simultaneously thinned the invasive underbrush and extended the popular Lanchester Nature Trail to nearly six miles, improving forest health and creating seamless connections for hikers and disc golfers alike.
“This is sustainability in action,” added David Hostetter, Vice President at SCS Engineers. “Working with CCSWA, our team combined smart course design with land-reclamation techniques to turn ‘trash into treasure’—a recreational space that will serve generations of Chester and Lancaster County residents. I am excited for this model to be employed at other landfills across the nation.”
A Vision Rooted in Rural Pennsylvania
The idea grew from CCSWA’s long-standing mission to create multi-use green spaces on landfill property. Drawing on a rural-Pennsylvania heritage where open land is cherished, Authority leaders saw disc golf as a low-impact sport that complements the area’s rolling woodland. The initiative aligns with CCSWA’s broader goals of wildlife habitat enhancement, environmental education, and community engagement.
