San Diego Leading the Way – Sustainable Materials Management

October 1, 2019

Truly sustainable programs address multiple factors, including all of the challenges associated with reaching carbon-reduction goals. SCS Engineers is supporting municipalities and private industry to achieve their goals while utilizing renewable energy and reuse/recycle technologies.

In the City of San Diego for example, careful planning, strong leadership, and effective teamwork of the SCS cross-disciplinary teams are continuously working toward the City’s goals of recycling organics and reducing their carbon footprint.

ASP Composting System diverts 40,000 tons per year of organic waste into rich compost for sale at the Miramar Landfill Greenery.

Read the case study about this remarkable program, which according to the StopWaste.com calculator, is reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent of removing 19,015 cars from the road every year.

San Diegans can be proud of their city as its program includes:

  • Recovering 60,000 tons of edible food for food banks distributed through non-profile organizations
  • Building an expandable composting system processing 40,000 tons of organic materials into a reusable product
  • Moving toward renewable energy resources to power landfill infrastructure
