MONTEREY, Calif. – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA posthumously awarded Robert P. Stearns the Eternal Flame Award at a special ceremony held during the Landfill Gas Symposium on Tuesday, March 25th. The award honors SWANA members who have made significant contributions to protecting the environment through their work in the landfill gas industry.
Robert P. Stearns, Bob as most knew him, co-founded SCS Engineers where he was President and Chairman of the Board. During his tenure, the company grew to be one of North America’s preeminent environmental consulting, engineering, and contracting firms focused on sound solutions and new strategies for waste disposal sites, landfill gas-to-energy initiatives, preventative environmental-damage measures, and environmental remediation.
Bob chaired the Environmental Research and Educational Foundation (EREF); was an active member of the Detachable Container Association (DCA); and served as a board member of several educational and cultural foundations in southern California. He was inducted into the Environmental Industries Association “Hall of Fame” in 2003; received a “Professional Achievement Award, Life Member” from the Solid Waste Association of North America in 2009; and served the American Society of Civil Engineers in many capacities, including Chairman of ASCE’s National Ethics Committee.
The Eternal Flame Award memorializes Bob’s lifetime dedication to preserving the environment for future generations through engineering and reminds the Stearns family and SCS Engineers how much Bob’s contributions are still appreciated today. Jim Walsh, President and CEO of SCS Engineers, accepted SWANA’s Eternal Flame Award on behalf of Bob’s wife Gisela and daughter Maria, who could not be present at the ceremony.
