Facility Energy Management – Modeling Services, University Student Center

The staff of SCS Engineers was retained to provide modeling services for a remodeled university student center.

A life-cycle cost analysis was conducted to evaluate a number of energy conservation measures:

  • optimization of window parameters
  • utilization of proper daylighting control settings
  • installation of a geothermal heat pump system to use in place of traditional steam and chilled water systems

An energy model was also developed, helping the school achieve the maximum possible points under LEED v2.2 Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance.

Follow-up measurement and verification services revealed a number of additional energy-saving opportunities that were previously undetected. Overall, these efforts helped reduce the student center’s utility costs by 45% compared to a building modeled to minimum code requirements.
