Christopher Petro and Paul Schafer of SCS Engineers cover essential strategies for cannabis growers, processors, merchants, and regulators in their article and webinar on odor control plans.
For cannabis operators, odor control is not optional—it is fundamental to sustainable operations. Success depends on a combination of proper facility siting, scientific measurement, proactive community engagement, and proven abatement technologies, all supported by quantifiable monitoring systems. Using a proactive, science-based approach, cannabis businesses can maintain compliance, manage costs, and strengthen their social license to operate within increasingly regulated and scrutinized markets.
Christopher Petro, MSCE, EIT is an SCS project manager who manages environmental air quality and odor monitoring services including conducting odor assessments and air quality management, land use planning, odor auditing, odor abatement planning, SPCC development, dispersion modeling, olfactometry, air sampling and data management using science and technologies such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, AERMOD and data management with SCS eTools.
Paul Schafer, CIEC, VETC, is an SCS vice president and project director who is SCS’s National Expert for Ambient Air Monitoring Services and Odor Impact Assessment Services. Paul Schafer has assumed key roles on several nationally significant monitoring efforts. He has in-depth experience in interfacing with regulatory agencies regarding the performance of monitoring systems, source emission tests, and odor assessments regarding monitoring programs and air quality impact assessments.
