Environmental Business Journal recognizes firms for growth and innovation

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Environmental consulting and contracting firm, SCS Engineers, has been selected for a Business Achievement Award from the Environmental Business Journal. EBJ has honored 50 companies for revenue growth, acquisitions, innovative project designs, technology applications, new practice areas, social contributions and industry leadership in 2012.

SCS Engineers received the Project Merit, Remediation, award for the firm’s innovative work on the Mercado del Barrio project in San Diego’s Barrio Logan community. SCS provided environmental consulting and construction services and was able to save the project owners approximately $2 million with their novel solution to reusing, instead of hauling away, contaminated soil in the area. SCS’s plan saved more than 1,600 truck trips to transfer the contaminated soil, and avoided the release of more than 1,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

“The Mercado del Barrio project is just another example of SCS’s ability to create innovative solutions for our clients,” said Daniel Johnson, Environmental Services Leader for SCS’s Southwestern U.S. Consulting/Engineering Operations. “We applied our knowledge of state and local environmental regulations to design a plan that worked, and saved the project money. We are honored to be recognized by EBJ for this Project Merit award.”

The Mercado del Barrio project achieved important community goals by incorporating smart growth and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles. The project is currently under construction, and will be completed later this year.

The 2012 EBJ awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Environmental Industry Summit XI in Coronado, California, on March 6- 8, 2013. Daniel Johnson will accept the award on SCS’s behalf.
