SCS Energy: Co-generation Combined Heat and Power Facility for a California Resort

Co-generation Combined Heat and Power Facility, City of Industry, California

SCS Engineers performed design-build services, followed immediately by operate-maintain services, for a 200 standard cubic foot per minute (scfm) landfill gas treatment facility at the Pacific Palms Conference Resort.

The landfill gas is co-fired with natural gas at a 980-kilowatt reciprocating engine plant. The engine is equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and oxidizing catalysts.

Post-combustion catalysts are very susceptible to fouling in biogas applications.  In order to prevent fouling, the biogas must be treated to ultra-pure level. The treatment system completed over 15,000 hours of operation without catalyst damage. Because of a reduction in the availability of landfill gas, SCS converted the engine to 100 percent natural-gas firing in 2012.
