Waste Characterization – Orange County, California

SCS Engineers was the prime contractor for Orange County’s self-haul waste characterization study. Waste sampling and analysis was conducted at the County’s three active landfills, and the data was analyzed to determine the quantity and composition of waste from self-haul and roll-off loads from all jurisdictions within the County.

The project included a two-season sort. The first was conducted in the summer of 2003, with the second season in the winter of 2004.

Tasks undertaken by SCS included:

  • regulatory review and analysis of statutes and regulations impacting the study
  • development of waste sampling work plan
  • conducting vehicle surveys at gatehouse
  • collection of activity and origin data for waste samples
  • data analysis and report preparation
  • design and maintenance of project website
