Environmental Justice Thriving Community Grantmakers

2024 EPA Update

The Environmental Justice Thriving Community Grantmakers has begun accepting applications. The US EPA selected 11 Environmental Justice Thriving Community Grantmakers to oversee the distribution of $600M in grants.  Three national grantmakers were selected: the Institute for Sustainable Communities for Regions 1 – 3, the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) for Regions 4 – 7, and the Criminal Justice Alliance for Regions 8 – 10.

The EPA Regional grantmakers are:

  • Region 1 – Health Resources in Action (HRiA)
  • Region 2 – Fordham University
  • Region 3 – Green & Healthy Home Initiative, Inc.
  • Region 4 – RTI
  • Region 5 – The Minneapolis Foundation
  • Region 6 – Texas Southern University
  • Region 7 – RTI
  • Region 8 – JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc.
  • Region 9 – Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), Inc.
  • Region 10 – Philanthropy Northwest

To date, Regions 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 10 have issued Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), and more will be coming soon.

The EJTCGM grants are designated for disadvantaged communities that do not have the resources to address environmental issues. There are three tiers of competitive funding. Tier 1: Assessment Projects enable community-based organizations to perform assessments in their communities to better understand local environmental and public health concerns. Tier 1 grants are capped at $150,000 for one year. Tier 2: Planning Projects are intended to assist community-based organizations create plans to address environmental and public health issues and are capped at $250,000 for one to two years. Tier 3: Development Projects awards are for “shovel ready” projects and are capped at $350,000 for two years. A non-competitive $75,000 grant is available to communities that need help build a foundation that will allow them to apply for future grant opportunities.

SCS Engineers can assist communities and non-profits apply for EJTCGM, which can be used in conjunction with EPA Brownfields grants or other funding sources.
