Robert Gardner to receive the AAEES Gordon Maskew Fair Award.

SCS Engineers is pleased to announce that the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) has selected Senior Vice President Robert (Bob) Gardner, PE, BCEE, as a recipient of the prestigious Gordon Maskew Fair Award.

Bob had this to say, “I am honored to receive this award from AAEES in recognition of my long-term contributions to environmental stewardship. I am also deeply grateful to SCS Engineers for the opportunities over the past 46 years to serve and support organizations like AAEES that advance excellence in environmental engineering and science—disciplines fundamental to modern society.”

The Gordon Maskew Fair Award recognizes Board Certified Environmental Engineers whose careers have significantly advanced the profession through sustained leadership, innovation, and meaningful contributions to environmental quality.

Recipients are honored at the 2026 Academy Convocation and Celebration of Excellence evening event on April 16, 2026, alongside Senior Project Professional, Parita Shah, EIT, M.ASCE, who is accepting an AAEES 40 Under 40 Recognition Award as an emerging leader making significant contributions to environmental engineering and science.

Bob Gardner is a civil and environmental engineer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Virginia. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and Board-Certified Environmental Engineer specializing in solid waste management. Bob recently retired from full-time service at SCS Engineers after 45 years with the firm, including 37 years on the SCS Board of Directors. He continues to support select clients and special initiatives.

Throughout his career, Bob has been a leader in the development and implementation of modern landfill and waste management practices. His early work in the 1980s included public works facility design, Superfund remedial projects, Virginia’s first RCRA clean closure, early RCRA Subtitle C corrective actions, landfill gas migration studies, and the establishment of SCS’s Florida operations.

In the 1990s, Bob led several industry firsts, including the design of Florida’s first materials recovery facility, the development of EPA and state training manuals, the implementation of the first onsite leachate treatment system, and corrective action projects that enabled site redevelopment.

During the 2000s, Bob served for 24 years as SCS’s solid waste practice leader, overseeing the firm’s engineering, consulting, construction, energy, and operations and maintenance services until his retirement at the end of 2025.

An active leader in AAEES, SWANA, and other professional organizations, including the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Environmental Research & Education Foundation, Bob has mentored generations of professionals who continue to advance environmental protection for industry and municipalities.

We congratulate Bob Gardner on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his decades of leadership, innovation, and service to the environmental engineering profession.
