The Vancouver Landfill opened in 1966 and is owned and operated by the City of Vancouver in Delta, BC, Canada. The Landfill is integral in managing municipal solid waste (MSW) from commercial and residential sources within Metro Vancouver as part of Metro Vancouver’s Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (Metro Vancouver, 2010).
The City installed new horizontal gas collectors and vertical gas extraction wells, now totaling 473 gas collection points. SCS has been helping the City of Vancouver since 2010 by expanding the Landfill Gas Collection and Control System with annual expansion designs. Through these efforts, the City of Vancouver’s gas collection efficiency exceeds the 75% Provincial goal. The commissioning of two renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities in 2024 results in approximately 76.3 million cu. m of landfill gas collected, destroyed, or used to make clean energy in 2024.
The Landfill incorporates design elements that help the City avoid a pressing problem in many communities and regions – dwindling landfill airspace. Even with composting and recycling programs in place to divert as much as possible, as populations continue to grow and citizen consumption increases, the amount of waste surges, pushing landfills to their limits sooner than anticipated.
Landfills are complex ecosystems requiring master planning and sustainable solutions for longevity and to create operating efficiencies while capturing as much methane as possible. We applaud the progressive approach the Vancouver Landfill is taking.
