Bill Lape discusses the two national “model” fire codes, the International Fire Code (IFC) and NFPA1 Fire Code, and two national “model mechanical codes, the International Mechanical Code (IMC) and the Uniform Mechanical Code (UMKC), that authorities having jurisdiction can adopt through government legislation. While these codes may be adopted statewide, they may also be amended by state legislation, so it is important to identify what provisions may differ and which version they refer to.
