SCS is an employee-owned environmental consulting and construction firm that designs and implements sustainable environmental solutions. SCS is a full-service provider. We study challenges and design solutions; we remediate, build and operate environmental and energy projects and systems; and we monitor a wide range of environmental control systems. Our core capabilities are solid and hazardous waste management, landfill gas, site remediation, renewable energy, and regulatory compliance for air, water, and soil.

    In 2012, SCS Designed and built the first Class III waste (trash + C&D debris) MRF in FL. In 2012, SCS helped secure the first Plasma Arc Gasification Facility permit issued in CA.

    LFGE + Biomethane Plant

    SCS constructed the first LFGE facility in Mississippi. SCS designed/built the first biomethane plant at a wastewater treatment plant in CA to inject digester gas into natural gas pipelines.

    Bioreactor Landfill

    SCS obtained the first Research, Development, and Demonstration (RDD) permit for a bioreactor landfill in EPA Region 9.

    Greenhouse Gas

    SCS develops, Technologies and Management Options for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Landfills, for CalRecycle -- CARB references as the specific guidance for operators to comply with AB 32 landfill methane rule.

    SCS obtains first permit issued in SC to re-develop an industrial waste landfill as industrial park.

    SCS performed the first statewide waste characterization study in CA.

    SCS obtained the first Research, Development, and Demonstration (RDD) permit for leachate re-circulation at a landfill in EPA Region 3.

    SCS Designed and built the first LFG-fueled microturbine power plant in the state of FL.

    Feasibility

    SCS Feasibility study for a diaper recycling facility; the first study of its kind in California.

    e-Waste Collection

    SCS designed one of the first e-Waste Collection events in California.

  • 1990’s
    RCRA Corrective Action

    SCS performed one of the first RCRA Subtitle C Corrective Actions in EPA Region 9. This project was redeveloped into the California Speedway NASCAR track.

    U.S. Patent

    SCS employee received a U.S. Patent for inventing the first fully-permitted method for on-site condensate disposal for a landfill closure. An injection-based system for incinerating contaminants in LFG condensate within an LFG flare.

    Leachate Collection

    Designed 1st landfill leachate collection sump of its kind in the U.S. on compressed phosphatic clay slimes: reinforced concrete sump, horizontal HDPE access, removable horizontal leachate pump, & extensive foundation geogrid.

    Leachate Management

    SCS designed the first onsite leachate treatment/disposal system of its kind in the U.S. including a 750,000 gallon leachate storage tank and reduced ammonia concentrations through a nitrification/de-nitrification process.

    RCRA Training

    SCS designed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D Training Manual for Regional EPA and State regulatory staff. Note: SCS proposed composite liners long before the promulgation of Subtitle D.

    MRF

    SCS Designed the first materials recovery facility in the state of FL. The MRF served Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.

    RI/FS

    SCS Performed the first state lead PRP RI/FS under Superfund in Virginia.

    Leachate Monitoring

    SCS prepared for the California Waste Management Board authoritative document titled Procedural Guidance Manual for Sanitary Landfills: Volume I Landfill Leachate Monitoring and Control Systems.

    Design-Permit + Corrective Measures

    Designed & permitted the first new landfills per Virginia 1988 Solid Waste Management Regulations.

    SCS planned one of the first RCRA Subtitle C corrective actions in EPA Region 7.

    Remedial Investigation

    SCS performed the first federal lead Potentially Responsible Party Remedial Investigation & Feasibility Study under Superfund in EPA Region 7.

    Clean Closure

    SCS Obtained the first RCRA clean closure in VA under a health-based approach for a site where contaminants were not removed to background levels.

  • 1985
    Superfund

    One of the first Superfund remedial designs in the nation by SCS. Superfund site in Hillsborough, NJ. Led to the site being among the first to be de-listed from the NPL.

  • 1982
    Coal Combustion and PCB’s

    SCS ground breaking projects for the electric utility industry on the proper management of PCBs and continue to be authoritative references to the present day.

  • Late 70's
    Post-Closure

    SCS designed & secured permits for one of the first commercial buildings constructed on a former landfill site in the U.S. SCS LFG O&M expertise integral to permit issuance, and continues to be a key element of site operations to the present day.

    Landfill Design

    In 1978, SCS wrote the EPA Sanitary Landfill Design and Operation Manual.

    In 1979, SCS wrote the EPA Sludge Landfill Design and Operation Manual.

    SCS Wrote the EPA’s national protocol for sorting municipal solid waste.
