The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, in partnership with SCS Engineers, began the 2026 Oklahoma Statewide Materials Characterization Study in November 2025, involving five landfills, including Ponca City, to analyze the types and quantities of waste being discarded and identify materials that could be diverted from landfills through reuse, recycling, or composting. The study’s findings aim to inform state and local leaders about opportunities for waste-reduction programs, policy improvements, and public education, ultimately conserving natural resources and extending landfill lifespans. This initial study establishes a baseline for tracking Oklahoma’s progress toward waste-reduction and recycling goals, emphasizing the importance of diverting reusable materials to preserve future landfill capacity.
