Sustainability Competitions

 

In the pursuit of a sustainable future, organizations increasingly use competitions to showcase their commitment to environmental responsibility. For example, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Better Climate Challenge drives energy efficiency, reduces pollution, and fosters financial savings for participating companies. Today’s blog explores how competitions like the Better Climate Challenge catalyze organizations to raise awareness, implement sustainable practices, and make significant strides towards a greener future.

The Better Climate Challenge sets ambitious goals for participating organizations. Companies then partner with the DOE to substantially reduce their portfolio-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (scope 1 & 2) by at least 50% within the next decade. This challenge spotlights environmental stewardship and aligns with global efforts to combat climate change. To illustrate the impact of such competitions, let’s use the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Better Buildings Challenge, a precursor to the Better Climate Challenge, as a case study.

 

Achieving Energy Reduction

Douglas Latulippe worked with a major national pharmaceutical store chain while participating in the Better Buildings Challenge. Participation required developing comprehensive energy strategies, including demand-side energy conservation measures such as HVAC upgrades, optimization, and controls, high-efficiency lighting and controls, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for Rooftop Units (RTUs), chiller plant and thermal energy storage, Retro-Commissioning (RCx), and automatic demand response (ADR).

The pharmaceutical chain’s commitment to energy efficiency resulted in an impressive overall energy reduction across all buildings of 17.5%, with some buildings experiencing a reduction of up to 30%. The cumulative impact of these measures resulted in substantial savings of 30 million kWh/yr of electricity and over 100,000 therms/yr of natural gas — eliminating over 21,500 metric tons of CO2 equivalent each year.

Beyond the environmental benefits, these initiatives translate into a noteworthy annual cost savings of over $3 million with a simple payback of under two years. Utility incentives and rebates also helped achieve this impressive return.

 

Partnering for Efficiencies

Participating in energy efficiency challenges fights climate change and saves money by creating win-win scenarios for industry and the environment. Mr. Latulippe is responsible for developing and supporting SCS’s nationwide energy management and renewable energy practice. His work includes services related to our air quality, greenhouse gas (GHG), and sustainability practices for public and private commercial businesses, industrial facility owners, real estate clients, utilities, and renewable energy project developers. His experience includes managing energy portfolios, including capital and operating budget development, power generation, demand-side project and program development, bill management and reporting, and utility incentive program management. He also performed energy audits and GHG reporting for Fortune 500 companies. As part of his power generation experience, Mr. Latulippe patented a solid-fuel gasification system designed for environmental mitigation and pollution control. In addition, the EPA recognized Mr. Latulippe for his extensive work with the ENERGY STAR program.

SCS Engineers Environmental Consulting and Contracting
Welcome to SCS Engineers Arizona! We’re excited to have more employee-owners serving our clients.

 

SCS Engineers is expanding its Phoenix, Arizona, office to meet the growing demand for sustainable environmental consulting and engineering. Recent employee-owners joining the firm are pictured upper left to right, including Samantha Montgomery, a technical associate; Mike Bradford, senior professional engineer; Cynthia Neitzel, a professional engineer; and Taylor Goins, field services working as part of SCS’s comprehensive team.

Montgomery’s focus is to prepare monthly, semi-annual, and annual greenhouse gas reports, along with processing and analyzing the data associated with those reports. She specializes in air quality compliance and permitting, particularly for landfills.

Bradford brings more than 20 years of experience in civil engineering and project management. He has been the principal engineer and engineer of record for a wide range of public and private sector capital projects in Arizona and across the country for solid waste landfills and other public works civil projects.

As a landfill project manager focusing on landfill gas collection and control systems and compliance reporting, Neitzel brings more than 20 years of experience. She has a background in landfill design, construction quality assurance, and air quality permitting and compliance.

Goins provides clients with landfill gas monitoring and other related environmental monitoring services, helping them reduce operational costs and protect air quality. He also operates and maintains other environmental pollution control systems.

SCS Engineers Food recovery
Wasted food is not food waste! Rather it describes food that was not used for its intended purpose and is safely managed. Edible wasted food is useful as donations to feed people, and for food banks. Other wasted food can create animal feed, composting, or used in anaerobic digestion. All these organic materials are not going to landfills and greatly reduce your carbon footprint, while serving up many benefits.

 

The Food DROP and RecycleSmart case studies in this EM article illustrate the successful collaboration between local governments and stakeholders in food recovery. In both cases, local government staff invested time to understand the barriers and benefits of different aspects of recovery. The resulting recovery programs provide local benefits by supporting the community and the collective benefit of reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfills in California.

As environmental professionals, we believe that positions us as key collaborators for these recovery programs across the country, whether helping businesses overcome the barriers and participate in food donation programs or to support the capacity expansion of recovery organizations and services. The official awards ceremony takes place during EBJ’s Environmental Industry Summit XVIII in San Diego, California, in March.

SCS is receiving the Gold Business Achievement Award for a Large Environmental Firm, for outstanding business performance in 2019. We largely attribute our organic growth to our clients interested in Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) and renewable natural gas (RNG) services. Our SMM programs increase our clients’ solid waste management efficiencies, reduce waste, and support sustainable recycling, and our design and design/build facilities convert landfill gas, dairy digester gas, and wastewater treatment plant digester gas to RNG. In addition, SCS’s Geographic & Practice Area Expansion initiative in 2019 enables us to expand our professional engineering and consulting services for liquids management, wastewater treatment, and emerging contaminants from new offices in the South, Central, and Midwest regions of the United States.

SCS RMC technology helps lower landfill operating costs and maximize gas capture by integrating next-generation supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) opportunities such as 3D imaging from drones and virtual reality (VR). Beyond typical SCADA features, our system uses aerial data to compose topographic mapping, 2D images, and 3D renderings. SCS RMC can also incorporate geographic information systems (GIS), thermal, near-infrared, and methane leak detection data. The 3D model in use by San Bernardino County and other clients incorporates a Microsoft HoloLens VR headset that allows executives, facility management, and operators to “walk the site” from their offices, as well as view and control equipment remotely from almost any internet-connected mobile device. The technology integrates with our SCSeTools® platform, in use on over 600 landfills that help facilities continually gauge operational health and spot trends that help determine when and how to invest in infrastructure.

 

ASP Composting System diverts 40,000 tons per year of organic waste into rich compost for sale at the Miramar Landfill Greenery.

The Environmental Services Division of the city of San Diego, in collaboration with SCS Engineers, is receiving the Composting Project Merit Award in recognition for the composting operation at the Miramar Landfill in San Diego. In collaboration with the City, SCS designed an innovative covered Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting system that will divert 100,000 tons per year of organic waste from the landfill. The ASP became operational in August 2019 and will compost 40,000 tons per year into useful by-products (and has capacity for an additional 20,000 tons). It provides an enhanced stormwater control system, and will eventually run on renewable energy generated from the landfill. According to the StopWaste.com calculator, the upgrade reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of removing 19,015 cars from the road.

Test before you invest.

In addition, the recent announcement of SCS’s ASP Composting Pilot Program is making headlines. SCS owns a covered ASP compost system that is mobile and can be set-up on sites within an area of 50 feet by 100 feet, or less. In the covered ASP compost system, process and odor control is pro-active with a shorter composting period. Pilot tests allow waste managers to assess composting and to see if it is the right fit for their situation. The ASP system processes material batches in two months. Additional batches or “recipes” can test in 2-month intervals.

“Managing air, water, and soil pollution prevention are driving state and local regulations,” said Bob Gardner, a Senior Vice President of SCS Engineers. “Offsetting as much of the cost by improving operations, lowering energy consumption, and switching to renewable energy resources is critical to our clients.”
